Heron Lake // Abe Nelson Decoy
Abe Nelson was a prominent guide and decoy carver on the infamous Heron Lake in Southwestern MN, during the era of market and sport hunting of canvasbacks before and after 1900. Abe Nelson is credited with being the decoy carver that created the "snakie head", wide bodied canvasback decoys of the time.

A rig of six, first series Heron Lake Magnum Canvasback Decoys will be available, end of September, 2026.

Heron Lake Canvasback
Heron Lake/Abe Nelson design Canvasback decoy.
This decoy is a "magnum" size decoy, the body measuring 13" in length. Historical Heron Lake decoy bodies averaged around 11".
F13 • Heron Lake Canvasback
Prototype #001x
White cedar body and head, with glass eyes and a hardwood keel.
Parker oil paints, multiple coats of spar urethane and primer base on entire decoy.
Both head and keel have dowel and epoxy construction.
These decoys will last for generations.
Primaries and speculum added for realism.
Appropriate weight will be added to keel once float tested.
There will be a rig of six available in late September, 2026.
Purchase these six decoys and have the first and only contemporary Heron Lake/Abe Nelson rig in the country.
